Lockdown Hello from Kids Unlimited
We have now been in this most recent COVID lockdown for about 8 or 9 weeks or somewhere around there … I don’t know, I forget .. I just know its been a while!
I feel like I’ve lost track of what week we are in because while juggling our 4 kids who are 10 years old and under, along with working from home, most of the time I struggle to remember what day of the week it is, let alone what the time is, if I’m being honest! Especially for those of us in Auckland it’s been challenging to say the least going from week to week unknowing of what will come next.
I think it’s the unpredictability and uncertainty that is hardest for many families because you can’t give the kids any reassurance about when life will be a bit more normal for them. I don’t know about you, but the ‘school holidays’ over the past two weeks did take a little bit of the pressure off of us - parents and kids alike - as we could put aside the distance learning and have a bit more fun with a little less routine. (Okay, fine, we never really had that much of a routine going in our house either. Who am I kidding?!) The weather has been pretty good and despite still being in Level 3 in Auckland, we at least have a lovely big back yard and the beach is also nearby so we have been able to get plenty of fresh air and sunshine which is something to be grateful for!
All of a sudden tomorrow is ‘back to school’ time again and I don’t think any of us really thought when this lockdown started that we would be in the same position as Term 4 came around , but here we are. Those of us in Auckland are about to start Term 4 from home tomorrow. I wish you all well with trying to re-establish some semblance of routine because I get the sense we aren’t going back to school in person anytime soon, and I hope I am wrong, but I’m preparing for the long haul here. I know many of you will be feeling much the same as I am…maybe nervous about how to motivate and keep the kids learning from home again. So I thought I’d share some of our awesome range of educational products with you to give you some ideas that might just make things that little bit easier for you and your kids over the coming weeks! We are here for YOU!
And don’t forget if you start to feel the distance learning / learning from home pressure building up …. Play is learning too! In fact, it is a child’s job to play! So don’t be worried if they aren’t online everyday doing their ‘school work’. My advice is that their (and your) mental health and well-being is paramount at this point, so be realistic with what you can achieve and of course even more importantly with more than one child at home …. pick your battles! What I can recommend is to encourage arts and crafts; encourage play, especially outdoors as often as you can; encourage imaginative play. And if your little loves are showing signs of struggling a bit with big or challenging feelings then consider getting some of our awesome emotional literacy books and resources for kids, teens and adults and carve out a little quality time together reading, learning about, and sharing feelings!
I know it can be really tough for many right now but I am confident you are all doing your best every day and with love in your hearts, YOU ARE ENOUGH for your kids! We are here to help you, with quality products to keep your kids happy, resilient and learning at home!
